“Good order is the foundation of all good things.”  Edmund Burke

The immune system, one of the eleven major body organ systems, defends the body against microorganisms and viruses, and is a foundational building block for a healthy body.  Massage therapists know the gentle touch of lymphatic massage stimulates and cleanses the lymph system, thereby increasing immune function.

What does this have to do with Feng Shui?   Just as it’s important to keep the lymphatic system cleansed in support of the immune system, it’s important to keep the Foundation area of our home clear to support the framework upon which our life is built.  Upon what is your foundation based?  Is it strong or needing repair, rigid or flexible? What can you do to strengthen it?

The Foundation area of your home is a place for you to honor your values, your parents, and the people and practices in your life that help you maintain inner strength.  Have you been feeling a bit unstable lately?  We can usually trace instability to a lack of taking care of our need to be still and receive spiritual nourishment.  Most people agree that a strong inner foundation begins with honoring our connection to Source, however you choose to describe it – God or a Higher Power.  Taking a 10 minute pause from your hectic life several times a day can work wonders to restore your spirit and physical vitality, providing the clarity you need to begin your next task or complete one in progress.

Our parents gave us our foundational values and a nurturing environment in which to explore who we are, a safe place to grow – or not.  Perhaps your childhood memories are not so comforting.  However, you’re reading this now, which means you survived.  Maybe it’s time to reconsider the values and behavior patterns instilled by your parents, choosing values that reflect your spirit, and spiritual practices that speak to your heart.  Programs such as the Hoffman Quadrinity Process or working with a life coach or spiritual counselor can help you rediscover yourself, and rebuild a foundation upon which you can emerge anew.

Foundation is associated with the color green and the element of wood.  Trees symbolize an ancestral connection to the earth, stability and history through deep roots, and flexibility through branches reaching out to support life.  Green is the color of creating space and seeing life from a new perspective; imagine viewing your life from the top of a tall, sturdy tree.  It’s the color of new life direction and expansiveness.  Wood is fuel for the fire of life, inspiring you to take action.

The Foundation area of your home or office is located at the middle left side as you enter from the front door.  Honor your parents and ancestral family members by placing mementos, photographs, or their artwork in this area.  Create a stronger foundation by incorporating vertical rectangular accent pieces and the color green.  Use live, upward growing plants or trees such as ficus or palm.  Paintings or photographs of nature, hung vertically, can bring the trees indoors.

Honor your foundation every day and be strong!
